Prior to the introduction of Smartbore, the component was machined using a brazed, fixed-pocket PCD boring tool. Whilst this solution delivered adequate wear-resistance operating at high speeds, there were a number of performance concerns.

The challenge was to overcome production downtime

PCD tools produced inconsistent finish as they became dull, meaning they had to be returned to the manufacturer for reconditioning. Reconditioning times were 10-14 weeks leading to missed key production targets.

When Rigibore was asked to look at the problem and come up with a new solution, it designed and manufactured boring tools using Smartbore cartridges that are easily replaceable and PCD inserts to achieve the same surface finish as before.
